Garage has come a long way from its roots in the New York club scene, and just like Drum and Bass, it has diversified and shared many different cultural aspects - that is a story for another time. Today, we delve into the times when Drum and Bass spilled over into Garage. In my research, I found this older thread on Reddit and decided to expand on the answers.
In the mid to late 90's Garage and its offshoot, Speed Garage, were in full swing in the club and rave culture, as was Drum and Bass. I was (and still am) obsessed with Moving Shadow from early on in my Drum and Bass exploration. "Rosary for Rhythm" caught my ear, so it is my first example. The subtle 2 Step beat still has the Drum and Bass vibe and gives a nod to Hip Hop and the culture.
Another powerhouse Drum and Bass label, Metalheadz, released "Be True" by Commix Remixed by Burial in 2010
I found a renewed love for UKG after Drum and Bass titans Chase and Status dropped "Brand New Machine" which included Blk & Blu
Nu:Logic, the Cambridge sibling powerhouse of Dan Gresham (Nu:Tone) and Matt Gresham (Logistics) not only are two of my all time favorite Drum and Bass producers, but also dropped this absolute banger VIP edit of "Everlasting Days"
While Covid shut down clubs and raves, I found myself getting deeper into mixing both UKG and Drum and Bass again. Imagine my surprise when I found a remix in both genres for the same song, Roy Davis Jr's "Gabriel"
Drum and Bass remix by Need For Mirrors
and a Garage remix by PJ Bridger
