There's Something About SoCal: Releases to Look Out For

LA’s Black Marble Collective has a release out on Beatport and Spotify that drops this Friday on every other platform. This release is a multi-genre collection of tracks from SoCal artists that include Horge, Charles Rebellion, and ED808. The genres available on this release include drum and bass, jungle, dubstep, UKG, IDM, ambient, experimental, electronica, dance, and rave. A steal at $8.99, there are 15 tracks included.
Horge X Charles Rebellion: “BFR”
San Diego’s own Horge and Charles Rebellion came together recently to make a really dope ragga jungle track that absolutely hits. The introduction to the song is incredibly misleading as it’s got a beachy reggae summer vibe. Gorgeous Jamaican patois vocals and thick bass accompany a slowly progressing whooshing sound. That element of the track initially sounds like waves crashing but frantically becomes heavy AF on the drums at the first drop. This continues intermittently with pretty chill breakdowns to balance things out nicely. You can hear parts of the track in this promo video:
Horge: “Translucent”
Horge has three tracks on this release: the first listed above, a UKG track called “Stardust Road”, and drum and bass track “Translucent”. The first thing the listener hears is some simple drums combined with melodic pads. A slightly sad vocal is introduced during the first breakdown and buildup before a nice and heavy drop. The track continues to grow and evolve into an emotive and moving drum and bass track that is heart-hitting and uplifting with a touch of sad.
ED808: “Project 2571”
ED808 is an artist that I’ve had in near-constant rotation since learning of him several years ago. His drum programming is next-level and fits in any drum and bass or jungle set. “Project 2571” is no different as it tells a very interesting story using the drums and the accompanying samples. Its beginning is almost benign compared to how hard-hitting the rest of the track is so there is definitely a bit of a journey within this track.
Horge & Charles Rebellion: “Descending Moon”
Horge and Charles Rebellion are back at it just a week later on July 5th with United by Bass Recordings's next release, “Descending Moon”. This heavy-hitting track fits into any energetic drum and bass set with its futuristic feel. It pays homage to the iconic anime film Ghost in the Shell. You can pick up this free track on both UBB’s Bandcamp and their Soundcloud.
Big up everyone! Thanks for reading this and supporting drum and bass. I'll be back next Tuesday with another installment of dnb sample history. The week after I have a very special interview lined up!
Cheers,
Tally G
