The Black Box in Denver, Colorado, is infamous worldwide as the premier venue for Bass Music in the US.
The Black Box comprises two rooms; The 350-capacity Black Box and The Lounge. Both of these rooms are covered in art from local Denver artists. There is also an outdoor space, that in the summertime, gets used as well for music. The patio also has art everywhere and holds one of my favorite pieces.
This venue is also the home to the Sub.Mission agency that boasts some of the world's best talent for Dubstep. This venue is home to Recon DnB, one of three 20+ year Drum and Bass crews in Denver. It is also home to UKG Proper, where they take over The Lounge every 2nd Saturday of the month. So many crews in Denver call this amazing venue home.
The staff here are as dedicated to this place as the artists and bass heads that come here week in and week out to get their bass therapy!
This venue has some of the best Sound Engineers that ensure all the artists sound their best and the bass cuts through you as much as they legally can! This venue is smack in the middle of Downtown and right next to apartments, so the work these sound folks do is critical!
The Lounge has 4x 20 some-odd-inch subs stacked and two Funktion tops to rattle this 170-ish capacity space! The art in this room is great and this is also where you can find all the different vendors The Black Box works with to support the local art scene.
The big room, The Black Box, calls its massive sound system The Basscouch system and is arguably the best sound system in the country for Bass Music. When it gets going you feel the concrete move under your feet! EVERY time I play on this stage I HAVE to turn down the monitors not due to the sound but due to the fact I get vertigo cause the damn stage is flexing under my feet! It is my favorite place to see a show and play a show. When artists from the UK come to Denver and they are not booked to play here, they ask about it!
This whole thing is the vision and dream of Nicole Cacciavillano who has been throwing shows in Denver for almost 20 years. She is also the brain behind Sub.Mission and she loves her Dubstep! The Black Box in 2025 will be celebrating 9yrs of shaking the shit out of Denver!
