Tally G's Top Picks for Bandcamp Friday
It’s that time of the month! No, not that one; this one is actually really popular and one that people look forward to: Bandcamp Friday. What is Bandcamp Friday? It’s the first Friday of the month and Bandcamp waives its revenue share, meaning that the funds go directly to artists and labels. I prefer Bandcamp over other music retailers because you are able to give the artists more than the asking price if you wish; not only that, but once you have purchased a track/release, you can download it in any format you wish at any time. You get unlimited free downloads of that release because you bought it! It’s also pretty awesome that you can preview a track in its entirety before you decide to buy it. This coming month’s BF is on May 3rd, which is this coming Friday.
Here are my top picks for this month. These are all in my shopping basket, ready to go on Friday morning. I have a cheated a little and included a couple of releases that are not yet available on Bandcamp, but will be eventually. They are both too good to not bring up.
This month I’m really feeling a lot of the jungle releases, including footwork and juke. Below are my favorites:
I haven’t yet heard the whole release, but Charla Green’s jungle ditty “No Stress” gives this one a lot of promise! The other three tracks are produced by Mineral, Toni Bassi, and DJ Junk and Moakz. It’s out on May 3rd.
More dope jungle from Unknown Artist, who’s been killing this game for a while.
I can’t recommend this release enough, especially if you’re into that really dark tribal jungle and half-step sound. It’s free, but it definitely shouldn’t be. There are 17 tracks and every one is absolutely fire. Artists include Offish, Rainforest, Red Army, Antares, 88 Katanas, and Rez. Please consider donating if you can.
For all the neuro heads out there, there are two releases I’m excited about, and unfortunately one is not on Bandcamp yet, but it will be out on May 3rd on Beatport, and it’s really good so I also recommend it
This two-track heater of a release is really well produced in a way that adds so much versatility. Both tracks fit in with a neurofunk, techstep, or minimal set with ease. Both Megalodon and Balistik have been on heavy rotation for the last month. This is by far one of my favorite Boomslang Recordings release,
Various Artists: 10 Years on Earth
The other release is available on Bandcamp and it’s a 10-year birthday celebration for LA-based Abducted Records/Abducted LTD. If you’re into the harder side of drum and bass, then this release is for you.
Okay so here’s another release that I’m hyped about that’s also not on Bandcamp (sorry, not sorry—it is too good to not suggest). Neither of these tracks are neuro, but one of them can definitely fit in with a neuro or techstep set as it hits.
“Cafe” is sneaky because with such a gorgeous piano intro you are led to believe that first drop will bring you into a roller or a liquid track. What you get is indeed some gorgeous piano during breakdowns coupled with really heavy-hitting distorted drops and some lovely amens that contrast nicely. “Movin’” starts with a beachy reggae steppa vibe that becomes a jungle roller. Definitely a versatile release!
This track certainly doesn’t sound free! It’s a nice little techstep ditty that I am definitely feeling and would easily fit in with any dnb set. Feel free to donate if you can.
And to round it all out, here’s the one liquid release that I will be purchasing:
This one is also a pre-order, out on May 3rd. The one track that is listenable, “Think Twice”, is a gorgeous roller. The rest of the release is not available for preview yet, but I feel like this entire release will be gorgeous.
I hope that this guide was helpful for you. If you have any releases coming up for the next Bandcamp Friday on June 7th, let me know so I can check them out and possibly highlight them next month. Take care and happy shopping!
’Til next week,
