On Fire This Fall: USDNB [A Music Review]

Updated: Oct 2

Big up, everyone!  There continues to be an amazing assortment of new drum and bass and jungle music from America and beyond. Today I have three releases that I am loving. Each happens to be US-based drum and bass artists, and are amazing at what they do.

First up we have the It EP from longtime Chicago-based legends Stunna and Renan.  Their three-track EP is out on San Diego-based Shoot Recordings as of September 13th, 2024 with an original release date of September 27th.  Each track is unique and could stand alone, but beautifully cohesive as a single release.

With a fantastic wilderness-inspired introduction including whale sounds, some spoken word vocals, and a hilarious clip before THE drop, "Pet It" will make you say, "Amen!"  The intro of this track is deceivingly smooth and mellow, making the drop feel even more energetic.  "Pet It" will undoubtedly make the crowd raise their gun fingers and go wild.

"Feel It" will have you grooving along to the growling, rolling bassline accented by delightful trumpets.  This bouncy little roller makes use of very clever sampling.

Like "Pet It", "Create It" is an energetic jungle track with a chill intro.  The beginning sets the tone with both funk and reggae samples before getting right into the amens with a heavy drop.

Florida-based Rolled Up Records is back with another excellent release, this one a stellar production from North Carolina's Electron-C and Atlanta's Sporty-O.  Their track is an energetic fusion of jungle roller partnered with neurofunk elements, finished with very smooth vocals.  Out now on Beatport.

Another winning release comes from midwestern phenom LO!  How It Feels is a five-track EP--out on Ray Keith's label Dubplate Dread--beginning with "Smoking Gun", a dark techstep roller. Second is "Finer Times", a beautiful footwork-influenced roller that is groovy and uplifting.  I can confirm that it is also fun to dance to.  Next, "Mad Ting" is a fusion of deep techstep and jungle wrapped up in a roller.  "So Far" is similar to "Smoking Gun" in that they are both dark techstep rollers, but "So Far" is far grimier and techier.  LO! wraps up this EP with a fun jump-up roller called "How It Feels".  This track features a very well-known cover sample from A Tribe Called Quest that will definitely get bodies moving.   I don't know if LO! has ever written a bad track because every release of his is absolutely top notch.

Have a great week, everyone!  Thank you for your support.
