Getting to Know NEMY #nemy #nemydnb #tallygtuesdays #tallyg #dnbproper #drumandbass #dnb #drumnbass #minimaldnb #rollers #liquid
One of my favorite sub-genres of drum and bass is minimal, also known as minimal funk. Minimal dnb is a stripped-down, atmosphere-forward sub-genre known for deep basslines. It is the perfect bridge to transition from softer tunes into harder, more energetic ones and vice versa. It easily mixes into techstep, liquid and other rollers, neurofunk, and footwork. It's the most versatile sub-genre of drum and bass, in my very humble opinion. Some noteworthy artists who produce minimal include Alix Perez, Rift, Sweetpea, Monty, and Dedman, to name a handful.
If you're into minimal drum and bass and have yet to hear of NEMY, let me be the first to introduce you. This Serbian music producer has been a force to reckon with the past several years. NEMY is genre-fluid; he has techno, tech-house, house, dubstep, and trap/future bass tracks in his discography, but he declared to UKF in an interview that his true passion is drum and bass. I think almost every drum and bass head can relate to that.
NEMY has been releasing drum and bass tracks since 2017. His discography since then has been quite impressive. His first couple of drum and bass EPs were liquid, out on Celsius Recordings. Since, he has released a plethora of labels ranging from the aforementioned Celsius, Skankandbass, BrainRave Music, and Incurzion Audio. In fact, he has a second release with BrainRave out the first Friday of January, so keep your eyes peeled.
Now that NEMY has a number of releases under his belt, it is finally time to release an actual LP. That happened in October of this year. The Black Obsidian LP, out on Rebel Music, has 10 original tracks along with an instrumental version of an included track. The entire album is excellent from start to finish. The three songs that stood out to me the most were "Undercover Operation", "Brain Glitch", and "Ziplock".
"Undercover Operation" is the track with an instrumental version as this features Swift. This high-energy minimal roller is perfect for building energy. The drop is thick and meaty as a good minimal track should be, especially with the deep vocal stylings of Swift.
The appropriately titled "Brain Glitch" begins as a typical minimal track, until you notice the menacing bassline that sounds like imminent doom accented by a moving, glitchy sound. This track reminds me of science fiction films in a very good way. I honestly cannot wait to drop this on a sound system to get the full effect of the growling bassline.
"Ziplock" is a deeper track with frequent punctuations of various electronic sounds and vocal samples. NEMY appears to be a master of call-and-respond in this track because he keeps it very interesting. It moves from peppy, electronic chirps to grittier synth sounds and back, slowly building and releasing, as the one vocal sample suggests: build, and chill.
I'll see you all back here in two weeks, most likely with an update on Jungle Bells, happening the 13th-15th in downtown Atlanta. For more info on one of the biggest dnb parties in the US, check out www.junglebells.org. If you can go, go! It's going to be a phenomenal event.
Big up, everyone!
