There has been a lot of discussion lately about MC culture as part of Drum and Bass. I thought it was time to briefly delve into the history of it. Drum and Bass has had a love affair with Hip Hop and MC going back to the beginnings. Both genres had a love affair with sampling and sometimes even the same sample. Amen Brother is one of the best examples of this. The sample has been use in one way or another through both. In the late 90's we started seeing US Hip Hop artists working with some of the pioneers in the UK.
Besides Bahamadia, Redman has Roni Size produce music for his album "Doc's Da Name"
This is also full cycle because Redman and Method man were samples quite a few times.
This classic cut has samples from both Fugees and Method and Red
As Hip Hop evolved and grew in regional popularity the fusion between the 2 became more intertwined with each genre making a space for the other
The four elements of Hip Hop also make a home in Drum and Bass. Any one who has been to a live drum and bass show can see these elements. The DJ is the reason that e are there. B-boys have been around since the jump. Graffiti art is everywhere in the clothes and album art. A love for Drum and Bass is a love for Hip Hop. The MC has a purpose and is just as important as the beats.
I leave you with this classic from Calyx and Teebee a nod to the culture and its fans.
